Certain stages have been rebalanced, decreasing their overall difficulty the original versions of these stages can still be played in a new "Original Stage Mode". Banana Mania features recreations of all 300 stages from Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (2005), a compilation release of Super Monkey Ball (2001) and Super Monkey Ball 2 (2002). To do this, the player must tilt the stage to direct the ball's movement, utilizing the game's physics to clear obstacles and avoid falling off the edge.

Some of the multiplayer games you’ll play once and never again but Monkey Target and the sports games are great fun and a good example of the kind of offline party game that has all but disappeared since the Wii era put them out of fashion. As in previous Super Monkey Ball games, the objective of the primary game mode is to navigate a monkey in a ball across a series of suspended platforms to reach a goal and clear the stage. Some of the games are more closely based on the main single-player game, while the sequel also introduced more complicated concepts such as Monkey Tennis, Baseball, and Soccer, a lightgun game called Monkey Shot, and the Star Fox-esque Monkey Dogfight. The most famous one is probably Monkey Target, where you have to glide your monkey to land on a range of targets on the ground, but the self-explanatory Monkey Golf, Billiards, and Bowling are also good value. None of them are very complicated, which is again the entire point, but they do have a surprising amount of content in terms of extra maps and levels. Sega was able to tempt themselves away from overcomplicating it by instead concentrating on a range of multiplayer party games, that work a bit like extended Mario Party mini-games.

That’s really all there is to the single-player and to be honest even the sequel seemed somewhat unnecessary, as one of the key pleasures of the concept is how simple it is. What isn’t obvious until you start playing is that you’re not controlling the ball directly but instead the maze itself, gently moving it around like a carnival game to get your monkey moving at the correct speed and angle.
